 Kent Gliding Club Aerotow P1 02:02 792E5061-Junior.IGC  Task Week Day 9 (final). CLK-WIG-HAW-CLK. Oh boy what a challenge, XC in a Junior in 15+ kt Westerlies :-) Anyway, made reasonable height and set off with large downwind component. 20km glide out to CAT, quite low but struggled downwind to WIG. Now the hard, manly part. Just no penetration, climbed, glided back to start of climb or just beyond! limited climbs, weak and low. Eventually found 3.5kts to 2600' and was able to glide a little, find another thermal to better heights and so found my way back. Was about 3k from the field and above 3k', set off to go as far S of the field for points, barely made the ridge at the S end of the airfield :-) so landed. Just pointless trying to penetrate. Good effort though.
423 01/09/2007 SZD-55-1 308 Kent Gliding Club Winch P1 01:09 791C4AE1-308.IGC  Task Week Day 8. AAT: CLK-PLU-CAT-CLK. Took off early, found good lift in poor conditions. Set off and made PLU & back easily. Another strong thermal so pushed out to CAT. Good trip out, 500' margin final glide, watched it decrease and couldn't improve due to -4kts and worse. Landed 1.3km short in what looked like a great field but turned out to be ploughed. Well held off landing but ground roll v violent due to large flints, etc. seat collapsed, items falling from behind panel, v rough. a/c pitched up and rubbed it's nose for a few metres scratching underside. Good retrieve, de-rigged in field, lots of help from other pilots - thanks guys & gals! Back at the launchpoint b4 some had taken off :-)

421 29/08/2007 SZD-55-1 308 Kent Gliding Club Aerotow P1 02:45 78TC4AE4-308.IGC  Task Week Day 5. CLK-DIT-BRK-CLK. 157Km. Managed 98km. Really difficult conditions today. Nearly didn't get started, hard to stay up due to late launch & dying sea-ish conditions, finally found a strong thermal to > 3k' & made a start. Lost a lot of height in 1st push along track. Radio traffic showed spreadout & darkening sky on track South. Slowed right down to MC=0. Stayed out of CTA so I could climb to cloudbase if only I could find a climb. Found a thermal near TED & climbed to cloudbase then maintained flying slowly & pulling up, turning as required as conditions v dark ahead. Flew over RIN and on to the S Downs ridge, ran along hoping for something in N breeze but zero. Turned DIT and after another max climb, headed for sunlit area which was Heathfield. Didn't make it (25Km!) turned for marginal final glide into RIN. Brilliant landing in front of crowd :-) Aerotow retrieve. Good effort!
420 28/08/2007 SZD-55-1 308 Kent Gliding Club Aerotow P1 03:47 78SC4AE1-308.IGC  Task Wekk 2007 Day 4. CLK-SIT-CNE-ETC-CLK. 142Km. Day Winner!!! Got around the long and difficult task when most went to PAD (86Km). Made 3 starts, great thermal b4 SIT, difficult to CNE, rounded and then real struggle along Stour valley, just cleared the ridge into the valley N of Ashford. Still struggled until S of Ashford then it became easier. Good final glide.

V difficult start early in the thermic day, cb 2400', headwind 14kts, so best idea would be to float d/wind first then run into wind for best part of day. However, managed to turn DON, quick return but last good climb nr Peterborough 4ish. Turned GRW and headed home.

390 06/07/2007 SZD-55-1 308 Kent Gliding Club Aerotow P1 01:31 776C4AE2.IGC Oh boy, it just gets better!!! Another bumpy tow and pulled off around 1000' QFE near the bowls. Made 2000' and set off as before to Hay. Great fun, a little lower, explored the Wye valley a little then went S along the ridge finding some weak wave. I managed to climb around 600' above cloudbase and set off for Lake Llangorse, flew along Mynydd Troed, past the club and returned to the bowls. This is where the flight got really interesting. I found the bowls working well at 1400' QFE and set about testing lift at low level down on the ridge instead of above it. I had a brilliant time increasing my speed to as much as 120 kts and rock polishing with a plenty of options. It was amazing, steep turns contouring the hills then back to the airfield.

I had a turbulent take off and aerotow and dropped off at 1200' QFE and established in the nearest bowl, climbing to 2300'. I then set off towards Hay Bluff around 7 km away NE passing Lord Hereford's Knob!, turned and flew back to top up at the bowls near the club. I then explored S almost to Crickhowell, crossed 5.5 km to the ridge near Lake Llangorse and ran back to the club. Staggering, one of the best flights so far.
